Help From Our Friends
On the cusp of SCC’s 25th anniversary, beloved local physician Dr. Francis L. Owens was honored as a tireless supporter of this college. His legacy continues to grow as his name still graces the cornerstone venue of BPAC.
Dr. Owens began his service to the Board of Trustees in 1967 and was a charter member of the Sandhills College Foundation board. A native of Pennsylvania, he attended the University of Pittsburgh, then earned his medical degree at Duke University. He practiced medicine in Moore County beginning in 1935 and served as chief of staff and chief of surgery at St. Joseph of the Pines Hospital. His efforts on behalf of the college were instrumental in not only the funding of his namesake structure but also the Kennedy Building that lies just beyond Evelyn’s Courtyard.
